If you are anything like me, you need some direction in your life. We are all drifting away in the currents of life, surrounded by our daily routines. It nice to be reminded of what is really important in life. Sometimes the best life advice comes from the lyrics of a nice and catchy song.

Here is a quick top 10 list of songs that I feel reflect the unique tone of Domore4yourlfieBesides from being a great performance, they offer a genuine life advice to follow.

“Cats in the Cradle” (Harry Chapin)

Telling the story of a father who never has time for his son and when the son grows up, he never has time for his father.

The lesson: If you won’t make more time for the people you love the most, whether if it’s your kids or your spouse, you may end up finding yourself alone and when you will want to spend quality time with your family, they may not have the time for you.

Best words of wisdom from the song:

“My son turned ten just the other day

He said, thanks for the ball, dad, come on let’s play

Can you teach me to throw, I said, not today

I got a lot to do, he said, that’s okay

And he walked away, but his smile never dimmed

It said, I’m gonna be like him, yeah

You know I’m gonna be like him”

“Wish You Were Here” (Pink Floyd)

Though this song is open for several interpretations, Roger Waters claims that this song was originally written about being present in one’s own life and freeing one’s self in order to experience life is the main topic in this song.

The lesson: Living in the present moment and try to experience the most out of life.

Best words of wisdom from the song:

“How I wish, how I wish you were here

We’re just two lost souls

Swimming in a fish bowl

Year after year”

“Isn’t It Ironic?” (Alice Morisset)

The lesson: You don’t always get what you want. Sometimes life has a funny and ironic way of speaking to us. You can’t avoid it, maybe just find a way to accept it.

Best words of wisdom from the song:

“It’s like rain on your wedding day

It’s a free ride when you’ve already paid

It’s the good advice that you just didn’t take

Well, life has a funny way of sneaking up on you

And life has a funny way of helping you out”

life has a funny way of helping you out

“It’s My Life” (Bon Jovi)

The lesson: We only have one life to live. There is no perfect timing to start doing, there is only NOW.

Best words of wisdom from the song:

“It’s my life

It’s now or never

I ain’t gonna live forever

I just want to live while I’m alive

(It’s my life)”

“Dust In the Wind”  (Kansas)

The lesson: Kansas waxes philosophical in this 1977 song, providing a reminder that we’re all simply passing through this world and “All we are is dust in the wind.”

Best words of wisdom from the song:

“All we do crumbles to the ground though we refuse to see

Dust in the wind

All we are is dust in the wind”

“Human” (Rag’n’Bone Man)

The lesson: We are only human, we make mistakes and unintentionally we can hurt the people around us, sometimes even the people near and dear to us the most. But our mistakes and imperfections are what makes us so human.

Best words of wisdom from the song:

“Don’t ask my opinion

Don’t ask me to lie

Then beg for forgiveness

For making you cry

Making you cry

‘Cause I’m only human after all”

“Another Day In Paradise” (Phil Collins)

The lesson: Collins sings this song from a third-person perspective, as he observes a man crossing the street to ignore a homeless woman, and he implores listeners not to turn a blind eye to homelessness and people in despair.

Best words of wisdom from the song:

“She calls out to the man on the street

He can see she’s been crying

She’s got blisters on the soles of her feet

She can’t walk but she’s trying

Oh think twice, ’cause it’s another day for you and me in paradise”

Don’t Worry Be Happy.  (Bobby McFerrin)

The lesson: If you worry too much you will only get things worse. Don’t worry, be happy. Keep that positive attitude and mindset, and you will see how it will affect your life.

Best words of wisdom from the song:

“In every life, we have some trouble

But when you worry you make it double

Don’t worry, be happy”

“Beautiful” (Christina Aguilera)

The lesson: As humans, we come in different colors, shapes, sizes, and cultures. Don’t let anyone bring you down because you are different as that make this world more interesting place to leave. Don’t let negative people get under your skin.

Best words of wisdom from the song:

“You are beautiful

No matter what they say

Words can’t bring you down

Oh no”

“I Believe I Can Fly” (R. Kelly)

The lesson: R. Kelly encourages perseverance and self-belief in the face of obstacles. If you want if hard enough you will get it.

Best words of wisdom from the song:

“If I can see it, then I can do it

If I just believe it, there’s nothing to it

I believe I can fly”

If I can see it, then I can do it

Did you like my list? Would you add anything else?

Alex.

  3. Don’t Worry Be Happy is by Bobby McFerrin, not Bob Marley (it was written after we’d already lost Bob)

    • Hi Anthony, you’re right!
Even though it is a common\honest mistake, as it has such a high resemblance to Bob’s unique tone, I wasn’t aware that this song was published 7(!) years after we’ve lost him. R.I.P.
      Thanks again!
